Tips for Keeping Your Phone Alive Through the Ride
Using ride tracking applications like Strava
- Switching off of 4G – On the iPhone, and possibly Android as well, you can go into your cellular settings and switch from 4G down to 3G. This will save you a ton of battery life
- Turn cellular off on unnecessary apps – Many apps on your phone run background updates, etc even while you don’t have them open. While in the cellular section of your phones settings, turn off the cellular for everything that isn’t necessary.
- Turn off GPS for unnecessary apps – Many apps that use GPS regularly check your location for things like alerting you that you are near their stores, etc. Turn off everything that uses location services that isn’t necessary for your ride.
- Drop the brightness – Your phone’s screen has a brightness setting, turn this down to the lowest level possible that you can still see the screen. While you are at it, turn off the screen when you aren’t looking at it. You probably don’t need to stare at your Strava or other ride tracking app the entire time you are riding.
- Go into low power mode – The iPhone has a low battery mode, and all phones have airplane mode. While you probably don’t want to use airplane mode unless absolutely necessary, if you are under 10% and you’ve still got an hour to ride, you may want to go dark for the last portion of the ride and so that you have some life left to let everyone know you finished.
- Bring a battery backup – These little cube devices are getting cheaper and cheaper, and you likely have gotten one at a convention recently. Make sure the thing is entirely charged in advance, and plug it into your phone while you are at rest stops along the route, or have it to recharge at the finish line.
We all can’t wait to join you this Friday for the Bike to the Beach New York ride. When you finish the ride, be sure to share it on Strava, Facebook, and Twitter. We hope you take tons of pictures and share the with us on social media. Be sure to tag #b2bNY and #BiketotheBeach. Have an awesome time!
