Bike to the Beach - Ride Rules

How to qualify

All riders must pay the annual registration fee and set up a free B2B profile and fundraising website.

All riders and crew must attend the Mandatory Pre-Ride meeting (to be scheduled).

All riders must raise the fundraising minimum ($500.00) by the day of the ride (July 31, 2009).

Rules of the road

By law, bicycles are classified as vehicles and as such are subject to the same laws. Careless cycling not only creates a bad impression of cyclists in general, it leaves spectators with a negative impression of Bike to the Beach. Sharing public roadways is not a right -- it's a privilege.

As we have to get over 100 cyclists of varying degrees of experience to Bethany Beach without injury, we have to take a no-tolerance approach to enforcing these rules.

Safety is our primary concern. Please stop at all intersections and obey all traffic laws and regulations. Helmets are mandatory. We also suggest you carry water and wear bright clothing for general visibility and safety.

RULES OF THE ROAD:

1.DON'T ride without a helmet. They are mandatory on the Bike to the Beach.

2.DON'T ever steer or brake without shoulder checking and signalling first. Use both hand signals and verbal signals to make other riders aware of your movements and obstacles that are in your path.

3.DON'T ride in the middle of the road. Stay near the curb and if there are parked cars, ride just far out enough to avoid getting hit by opening doors. If there are a series of sewer grates or parked cars, don't weave in between them as drivers may not be ready for your sudden reemergence in their lane. Instead, ride in a straight predictable line only as far out as you need to avoid such obstructions.

3.DON'T ride double on streets with any car traffic. Ride in an orderly single line.

4.DON'T run red lights, not even at T-intersections.

5.DON'T coast past stop signs. Most accidents happen at intersections - never assume that the way is clear or that cars will see you.

6.DON'T block right turn lanes. When stopped at an intersection, don't block traffic by bunching up in the right lane, line up single file to allow cars to get around you. If you are going straight through an intersection and there is a right turn lane (or off/on ramp), shoulder check, signal your intentions, and steer steadily into the through lane. Once in the lane, stay close to the lane markings on your right.

7.DON'T wear headphones. It compromises your ability to hear approaching vehicles and verbal signals from other cyclists. Riders must follow the designated route and sign-in a the end of the ride. It is extremely important that all Riders sign in - it's the only way we can ensure that every Rider has arrived safely at the end of the day.

Safety & Etiquette Policy

Riders must cooperate at all times with event staff, Crew, and local law enforcement. Always maintain a safe and non-disruptive behavior, including no verbal or physical fighting or harassment.

You may not possess or be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol while riding or driving.

Watch out for the safety of others as well as your own. Obey all traffic laws. Riders must always wear a CPSC-, ANSI, Snell-, or ATSM approved helmet when on their bike. Use of earphones, radios or cell phones while riding is not permitted.

Any adornments on your bicycle must not extend beyond the rear wheel of the bicycle, so as not to disrupt other riders. At all times, adornments must not obstruct ANY rider's view.

If a Rider disobeys these rules they will be taken off the road, for their own safety and the safety of others, and transported to the next campsite. If unsafe behavior continues, they will not be permitted to finish the ride with us. Return transportation to Toronto will be arranged.

Emergencies

First-aid kits will be available at break stops and aboard from event crew. We will also be assisted by area Emergency Medical Services EMT's

Keep it Green

No littering: All garbage must be placed in the appropriate receptacles. Make use of sanitation facilities along the route.
